DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

Grist is a nonprofit organization; its funding sources include foundations, major donors, advertising, and about a million devoted readers. And if there's one thing we like more than reporting and riffing on environmental news, it's having the money to keep our organization running. That's where you come in!

Grist seeks a personable, entrepreneurial, experienced Development Director with proven success designing and executing a full range of philanthropic fundraising strategies.

Job Description:

The Development Director will be responsible for designing and executing Grist's fundraising strategy. This is an exciting time at Grist: we've set forth on a multi-year, organization-wide campaign we call Grist 2.0. Grist has grown fast and will continue to do so. As part of our strategic plan, we expect to significantly grow our contributed income within three years. Reporting to the president and working closely with board members, the director will be part of Grist's management team and supervise our growing development staff. We're looking for someone who can quickly build on the organization's success and rapid growth and play a hands-on role in expanding the current development program. Priorities will include creating a major-donor program and extending our innovative e-philanthropy program.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter with an energetic personality who is comfortable working both independently and as part of a team. Experience and contacts in the progressive funding community are an asset. The Development Director will work out of our Seattle office with some travel required (approximately 20 percent).

Responsibilities Include

  • Design and manage development strategy, plan, calendar, and budget
  • Create and manage major-donor program, including cultivation of prospects and organizing fundraising events nationwide
  • Provide activities support for president and volunteers in fundraising activities
  • Identify, research, cultivate, solicit and steward foundation and corporate donors, including previous donors and new prospects
  • Develop innovative strategies to raise money online from readership
  • Manage production of materials including letters of inquiry, grant proposals, reports, and other communications
  • Serve as fundraising liaison to Grist's board and fundraising committee, including preparation of meeting presentations and special board projects
Required Qualifications:

  • 5-7 years of fundraising experience, with proven success in the areas of individual and foundation giving
  • Demonstrated ability to raise over $4 million annually
  • Experience in building and leading a development team
  • Experience managing and motivating boards and volunteers in fundraising initiatives
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail, strong time-management and organizational skills
  • Experience with fundraising databases (Salesforce preferred), and strong comfort with MS Office, including PPT
  • Strong acumen for financial reports, and ability to create reports reflecting fundraising activities
  • And, hey, a sense of humor and ability to roll with the punches always helps!

WEB PRODUCTION MANAGER

Grist (www.grist.org) seeks a personable, experienced Web Production Manager with proven success managing and leading a fast-paced, dynamic web production department. As the country's leading online source of environmental news and analysis, Grist informs, inspires, and links America's next generation of green citizens. Our work has garnered many awards and frequent citations in major media including The New York Times, Vanity Fair, National Public Radio, and the London Independent.

All of which we're excited about! But all of which don't mean hooey if we don't have a good-lookin', high-performin' site for readers and reviewers to look at and interact with. And that's where you come in.

Job Description:

This position will lead a team of five people responsible for the publication of all web content and projects related to the web site. In addition to managing day to day publishing, we are seeking an energetic and experienced candidate to help lead the team as the organization grows and expands. Grist is increasingly taking advantage of Web2.x publishing opportunities - user-interactive content, dynamic syndication, social-distribution - which will be a significant focus of this position. Grist's production output will include traditional websites, RSS feeds, tailored email, audio, video, widgets, and will evolve toward technologies that haven't been developed yet. The Web Production Manager will play a vital role in Grist's daily publishing, coordinating schedules, priorities, and bridging the gap between Grist writers and Grist readers. This position reports to the Director of Information Technology.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure timely publishing/deployment of all website content
  • Oversee the processes and products used to support distribution of email newsletters and RSS feeds to Grist subscribers
  • Administer the content management systems used for the web content and site blog
  • Ensure appropriate tracking and reporting of web statistics and web analytics
  • Manage the production and implementation of podcasts, vodcasts and slideshows
  • Oversee and coordinate projects across departments including marketing, business development, fund raising
  • Manage and track advertisements on the site and coordinate with third party ad server organizations
  • Assume a leadership role to support product and website changes to meet strategic goals
  • Lead and develop team members
  • Work with the team to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues
  • Coordinate, prioritize and distribute work within the team
Qualifications:

This position requires experience in the following areas:

  • 2-5 years team management or supervisory experience; project management experience -- particularly scheduling, and meeting deadlines -- a plus
  • Ability to prioritize and juggle many assignments within the team; flexibility to adapt to change
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to producing quality work
  • Strong communication, problem solving and decision making skills
  • Ability to see big picture and to recommend changes in line with organizational strategy and direction
Experience with the following is preferred:

  • System librarianship -- content architecture and organization
  • Content management and email list management
  • Breadth of experience in multimedia publishing; experience with a variety of media distribution channels
  • Online advertising
  • Systems administration
  • Google Analytics and log analytics
  • Web development methodologies
  • PHP, XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, XML/RSS
  • MySQL and Apache
